On Standard View of Disability. An epistemic and ethical issue

The Standard View of Disability (SVD) presupposes that having a disability invariably worsens a person's quality of life. Some scholars have identified that the judgements of this perspective are informed by an ableism that assumes the able-bodied perspective as the norm and attempts to isolate the body from its social determinants. Here I will try to answer the following questions: Are the generalisations that the SVD presupposes to describe the quality of life of people epistemically justified? What ethical consequences does the SVD entail for health decision-making?

France passed a law on 15 March 2004 prohibiting students from wearing „conspicuous” religious symbols or clothing („signes religieux ostensibles”) that would display their religious affiliation at school. This would allow everyone to be – beyond the convictions of each individual – „free and equal". However, the question arises whether the law promotes equal treatment in reality. I draw on Nora Berenstain's concept of “epistemic exploitation” and present a series of precisions to consider the asymmetric relation between marginalized groups and public and private institutions. I am particularly interested in those interactions in which the former are called upon to collaborate, under conditions that sustain and reinforce the asymmetry, with institutional projects that will affect their communities and will be executed with or without their participation. I will focus on trans groups, but epistemic extortion is not exclusive to them.
